Original Lilo & Stitch Director Gives Thoughts on Remake in Exclusive Clip

ComingSoon is debuting an exclusive Lilo & Stitch clip, diving into what makes the iconic duo such a special pair in Disney’s rich history.

What happens in the Lilo & Stitch clip?

The clip comes courtesy of one of the bonus features found on Lilo & Stitch’s home release. In it, Filmmaker Chris Sanders — who directed the original Lilo & Stitch and voiced the character — and remake director Dean Fleischer Camp explain what makes Stitch such a special character in Disney history. Producer Jonathan Eirich also explains what makes Lilo such a great character, and why the pair have resonated so much together as a duo.

“It’s exciting to see what other directors and writers’ interpretations are of the property,” said Sanders of the film. “Stitch is interesting. His closest Disney neighbor is probably Donald Duck. Donald has the ability to start trouble, and he gets caught in his own mischief. … There’s a lot of people who see themselves in Lilo. Lilo is a very specific character. We were very careful when we crafted her. She’s just really interesting. She’s very thoughtful, but she’s got a very vivid imagination.”

The live-action Lilo & Stitch movie will be available to rent or own on digital platforms starting on July 22. It will then be followed by its 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD releases on August 26. Disney will also be releasing a must-have 4K UHD Blu-ray SteelBook edition, featuring a bold cover art with Stitch breaking through the cover.

Lilo & Stitch’s live-action remake was released in May 2025 and went on to become a massive hit for Disney. To date, the film has grossed just over $1 billion at the global box office, making it only the second film of 2025 to cross the $1 billion mark (Ne Zha 2 earned $2.2 billion). The film is also now the highest-grossing live-action/animated hybrid film in history.

Maia Kealoha stars as Lilo in the film, while Sydney Agudong plays Nani, Kaipo Dudoit plays David, Tia Carrere plays Mrs. Kekoa, Courtney B. Vance plays Cobra Bubbles, Amy Hill plays Tūtū, and Jason Scott Lee is playing a luau manager. The voice cast, meanwhile, includes Sanders as Stitch, Zach Galifianakis as Dr. Jumba, and Billy Magnussen as Agent Pleakley.

“A live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic, “Lilo & Stitch” is the wildly funny and touching story of a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family,” says the synopsis.

The script was written by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, while Sanders and DeBlois wrote and directed the screenplay for the original 2002 movie. Sanders voiced the character in the original movie and numerous other projects, including Lilo & Stitch: The Series, 2005’s Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, and 2006’s Leroy & Stitch.
