The live-action Captain Planet remake is moving forward, though not as initially planned.
Captain Planet, also known as Captain Planet and the Planeteers, is an animated superhero television series created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner. The series originally premiered in September 1990 and ran for six seasons.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way was previously trying to turn Captain Planet into a live-action feature. The movie was being made for Paramount Pictures and was being co-written by Glen Powell and Jono Matt.
Per Deadline, the rights to Captain Planet eventually reverted to Warner Bros. Discovery; although, “Powell had remained passionate about it as his star rose fast post-Top Gun: Maverick.”
What is happening with the live-action Captain Planet remake?
Rather than being adapted into a feature film, the Captain Planet and the Planeteers remake will now be a live-action series that is being made for Netflix.
The show comes from Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, Appian Way, and Warner Bros. Television. Tara Hernandez will write the show, while DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson, Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman serve as executive producers.
Powell is no longer involved with the project; however, Matt still serves as a producer.
“Captain Planet and the Planeteers follows five teenagers who tackle environmental disasters with the help of a superhero, Captain Planet,” Deadline’s article states. “The animated series was produced by DIC Enterprises (Seasons 1-3) and Hanna-Barbera Cartoons (Seasons 4-6). Berlanti is no stranger to the superhero genre — he built an expansive DC universe at the CW. This marks Berlanti Prods.’ second high-profile live-action series adaptation of a beloved WBD animated property for Netflix, joining the upcoming Scooby-Doo origin series. At Netflix, the company also was behind hit thriller drama series You, co-created by Berlanti.”
No plot details, casting, or release date information regarding Netflix’s live-action Captain Planet show is available at this time.
