Many are wondering why Duster, starring Josh Holloway, was canceled by HBO Max. Created by J. J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, the crime-thriller series takes place in the Southwest in 1972. It follows FBI’s first Black woman agent, who collaborates with a skilled getaway driver. With the series having concluded this month, a Season 2 wasn’t renewed, and here’s why.
Why was Duster canceled before Season 2?
HBO Max likely canceled Duster after one season due to its insufficient viewership and lack of interest among the audience.
Generally, for a series to get renewed, a lot of factors are at play, specifically audience reception, viewership, and ratings. Although this new series garnered impressive ratings of 93% from critics and 85% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes, it still faced challenges. It also received acclaim for its apt use of 70s aesthetics, cast performances, musical score, and costume design. Despite receiving a positive reception, it failed to capture enough viewer interest or generate the expected hype, which ultimately led to its cancellation.
HBO Max released a statement to Deadline confirming that the series won’t be moving forward after Season 1. It also extended gratitude to the cast and crew members who were involved in bringing this series to life.
The statement read, “While HBO Max will not be moving forward with a second season of Duster, we are so grateful to have had the chance to work with the amazingly talented co-creators J.J. Abrams and LaToya Morgan, and our partners at Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. We are tremendously proud of this series led by Josh Holloway and Rachel Hilson and we thank them along with our cast and crew for their incredible collaboration and partnership.”
The main cast members are as follows: Josh Holloway as Jim Ellis, Rachel Hilson as Nina Hayes, Asivak Koostachin as Awan Bitsui, Sydney Elisabeth as Genesis Saxton, Benjamin Charles Watson as Royce Saxton, Camille Guaty as Izzy Reyna, Adriana Aluna Martinez as Luna Reyna, Greg Grunberg as Nathan Abbott, and Keith David as Ezra Saxton.
