Director Matt Shakman was originally attached to helm Paramount Pictures’ long-delayed Star Trek 4 movie, which has been stuck in development hell since 2015. However, due to several creative setbacks, Shakman eventually decided to exit the project in favor of directing Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
What did Matt Shakman say about Star Trek 4?
During a recent interview with Variety, Shakman was asked about his canceled version’s story. He decided to keep it a secret for now, because he still believes that the studio will eventually make Star Trek 4 someday.
“The core idea, I think, remains the same. I really hope they get a chance to make that movie,” he said.
In addition, Shakman also shared what happened during the pre-production stage of his Star Trek 4 movie before leaving the project in 2022. The filmmaker confirmed that they were actually so close to moving forward with its production, revealing that they already “had stages, we had crew, we were moving ahead.” However, the project suddenly “changed dramatically” to the point that they had to let the crew go and tear down the stages they’d built.
In March 2024, Steve Yockey (The Flight Attendant) was hired to pen a new script. Following Shakman’s exit, there is still no director attached to the project. It has already been three years since producer J.J. Abrams previously announced that Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg would be reprising their respective roles from Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), and Star Trek Beyond (2016). It’s unclear if they are still set to appear in the fourth installment.
