More than three decades since its debut, Amazon MGM Studios has started development on its upcoming Basic Instinct reboot based on the controversial erotic thriller movie led by Golden Globe winner Sharon Stone. During its theatrical run in 1992, despite garnering controversy due to its explicit content, the film was a box office hit with a worldwide gross of over $350 million.
Who’s involved in the Basic Instinct reboot?
According to TheWrap, the original movie’s writer Joe Eszterhas (Flashdance, Showgirl) has officially signed on to pen the screenplay for Amazon MGM Studios’ Basic Instinct reboot. The deal reportedly cost the studio $4 million, making it this year’s biggest spec script sale.
The outlet also notes that Stone could potentially reprise her iconic role as Catherine Tramell. Further details about its plot are still being kept under wraps, but it is being described as “anti-woke.” The reboot will be produced by United Artists’ Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt, with Craig Baumgartern and Adam Griffin serving as executive producers for their Vault Entertainment banner.
“To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist,” Esztherhas said in a statement. “I call my writing partner the TWISTED LITTLE MAN and he lives somewhere deep inside me. He was born 29 and he will die 29 and he tells me he is ‘sky high up’ to write this piece and provide viewers with a wild and orgasmic ride. That makes me very happy.”
