Harry Potter HBO Show’s Time Period Setting Revealed in New Set Photos

With HBO‘s Harry Potter remake now in production, set photos have made their way online showing fans how Harry’s maternal relatives, the Dursleys, will look in the new series adaptation.

Dominic McLaughlin (Harry Potter), Bel Powley (Petunia Dursley), Daniel Rigby (Vernon Dursley), and Amos Kitson (Dudley Dursley) were recently spotted filming at the London Zoo for Harry Potter. All four look extremely faithful to how they are described in J.K. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel, The Philosopher’s Stone, which was published in the United States as The Sorcerer’s Stone. Powley’s Petunia is shown sporting blonde hair, while Rigby’s Vernon has a beefy moustache, just like their respective novel counterparts.

Many Harry Potter fans have been quick to point out that the cast is dressed in nineties-era appropriate outfits. Rowling set her Harry Potter series in the 1990s, a decision that the upcoming adaptation looks to be following. This marks a notable change from the movies, which never outright stated when they were set, but also never made any effort to look like it was taking place in the 1990s.

Announced in 2023, HBO’s Harry Potter remake has been described as a more faithful adaptation of Rowling’s beloved novel series. McLaughlin leads the series as Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton co-starring as Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, respectively. The rest of the main cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Francesca Gardiner is serving as head writer and showrunner on Harry Potter, while Mark Mylod is attached as its main director. Production on the first season is expected to last until May 2026, with Season 2 set to begin a couple of months later, likely to get ahead of any major growth spurts the younger actors might go through as they get older, something that Netflix’s Stranger Things series struggled with due to the long production gaps between seasons.

Harry Potter is slated to premiere on HBO in 2027.
