Fans can’t get over Robbie Coltrane’s Hagrid after Nick Frost’s new look

HBO has released the first image of Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid in its upcoming Harry Potter reboot series.

Frost, best known for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, takes on the role made iconic by the late Robbie Coltrane. The image quickly circulated on X (formerly Twitter), prompting mixed reactions from fans. One user wrote, “Our OG is irreplaceable but all Potterheads will agree that even Hagrid will approve of his successor.” Others, however, expressed hesitation.

Another user posted, “Love Nick Frost, but no chance of out-Hagrid-ing Hagrid.” One comment simply read, “OG Hagrid is still superior.” Another user criticized the design: “They gave Hagrid that America’s Next Top Model beard, wrap this s— up,” attaching a screenshot from the new image.

The show began filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K. and is expected to premiere in 2027 on HBO and Max. The series is led by showrunner Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials, Killing Eve) and director Mark Mylod (Succession), who also serve as executive producers alongside J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.

The cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore. Other cast members include Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy. Luke Thallon plays Professor Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse appears as Argus Filch. Each season of the show will adapt one of J.K. Rowling’s seven Harry Potter novels.
