The Last of Us Season 3 Release Date Window Confirmed by HBO CEO

The Last of Us Season 3 release date got a major update from HBO CEO Casey Bloys in a new interview. Bloys revealed new details about the upcoming season’s timeline and co-creator Neil Druckmann’s exit. He also discussed what showrunner Craig Mazin is planning for the future of the hit adaptation.

The Last of Us Season 3 release date window is still far away

HBO CEO Casey Bloys confirmed that The Last of Us Season 3 is “definitely planned for 2027.” He stated in a Variety interview that showrunner Craig Mazin is still deciding whether the story will unfold over one long season or two additional ones. “It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that,” Bloys said.

Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the series, stepped away from the new season. He is focusing on his responsibilities as head of Naughty Dog and game development. Bloys addressed Druckmann’s departure, saying, “Neil has a full-time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog… But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show.” Bloys emphasized his continued trust in Mazin, calling him a “pro.”

Despite changes in cast and character focus, Bloys stated there is no concern from HBO’s side about marketing Season 3. He added, “The title is obviously helped by the video game, and now the first two seasons is pretty well established.”

The show received 16 Emmy nominations this year, part of a record-breaking 142 nominations for HBO and Max combined. “When I think about the team at HBO and all the creatives that choose to work with us, I’m thrilled with the recognition that they get,” said Bloys. He highlighted contributions from team leaders, including Francesca Orsi (drama), Amy Gravitt (comedy), and Sarah Aubrey (Max Originals).

Bloys did not confirm a release window narrower than 2027, but indicated that production planning is underway. With Druckmann’s framework and Mazin’s creative direction, HBO is preparing to continue the adaptation with unwavering commitment.

HBO has not announced any casting updates or episode counts for Season 3 at this time.
