The Studio’s Emmy Success Shows Streamers Need To Take Bigger Swings

Apple TV’s The Studio was the darling of this week’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, taking home 23 nominations in a record-setting debut for the Seth Rogen-led and created series.

Apple TV+ got another big hit with The Studio

Season 1 of The Studio was a massive hit for Apple TV+, another in a long line of successful projects the streamer has been behind. When the Primetime Emmy Awards nominations were announced this week, The Studio shocked the industry and fans alike with a whopping 23 nominations.

The 23 award nods not only tie it with Season 2 of FX’s The Bear as the most-nominated season of a comedy series ever but also break the record for most ever nominations for a freshman comedy show, breaking Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso, which once got 20 nominations.

Alongside The Studio, Apple TV+ also led the way in terms of total nominations for a single show. Severance, the hit drama led by Adam Scott, scored a whopping 27 nominations and is likely poised to be one of the biggest winners of the awards when they happen on September 14, 2025.

While Apple TV+ has always had critically praised shows on its service, its recent run of projects has vaulted it into the conversation as the best streaming platform out there right now. The reason why, in part, is also due to their dedication to quality over quantity.

More streamers should focus on quality over quantity to get their money’s worth

Apple TV+ is no stranger to having invested a ton of money into projects over the course of its history as a platform. However, as of recently, the streamer has begun investing in more high-profile TV shows and “prestige” movies in an effort to capture an audience they hadn’t had before.

While streaming platforms like Netflix do dip their toes into long-running TV series or high-profile movies, the general concept for some of the “bigger” streamers is to invest in a ton of different projects in order to keep audiences around.

With Apple TV+ already lagging behind some of its bigger competition, the streamer has gone for a more modest approach of favoring quality rather than quantity. Shows like The Studio, Shrinking, and Severance are all projects that would be right at home on a cable network like HBO, and most importantly, they continue to invest in shows that have proven successful, like For All Mankind, The Morning Show, Foundation, and more.

Some may complain about Apple TV+’s relatively small back catalog, but the streamer continues to invest in a strategy it believes to be working. If award nominations and critical praise are any indication, it seems like it has been.
