What are the first reactions to I Know What You Did Last Summer?
I Know What You Did Last Summer (IKWYDLS) had its world premiere in Los Angeles on July 14. While reviews remain under embargo, the reactions on social media are starting to roll in on X, and they’re surprisingly positive.
Film critic Scott Menzel called the slasher a “perfect legacy sequel” and “everything the new Scream movies should have been but weren’t.” While Menzel said most of this summer’s films have been disappointing, I Know What You Did Last Summer “delivers on exactly what it promises.”
Entertainment writer Sophia Soto named the reboot her “favorite movie of 2025.” Soto praised the “phenomenal” cast who “worked so well off of each other.”
Box office expert Juan named IKWYDLS as “one of the greatest legacy sequels.” Juan credited the returns of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. for delivering some of the “best parts of the movie.”
Critic Sean Tajipour wrote, “This new chapter brings those classic chills and brand new kills, and I was living for every wicked legacy callback.” Tajipour believes it honors the original while “carving out something fresh, fun, and scary.”
I Know What You Did Last Summer is the fourth film in the franchise and a sequel to I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Similar to the plot of the 1997 film of the same name, IKWYDLS follows five friends involved in a deadly car accident. Instead of reporting the incident, the group covers up their involvement. One year later, someone knows about their involvement in the accident and wants revenge.
“As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help,” the official synopsis reads.
The slasher stars Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Tyriq Withers, Sarah Pidgeon, Billy Campbell, Gabbriette Bechtel, and Austin Nichols. Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt reprise their roles as Ray Bronson and Julie James.
Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directs from a screenplay she co-wrote with Sam Lansky. Robinson and Leah McKendrick receive story credits. Neal H. Moritz is the producer.
I Know What You Did Last Summer opens in theaters on July 18.
