HBO released the first official image of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter. The reveal marks the start of production on its upcoming TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s bestselling book series.

Producers selected 11-year-old McLaughlin after an extensive casting search among British children aged 9–11, casting Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

Executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod stated, “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”

Social media reactions to McLaughlin’s casting were swift and widespread. One fan posted, “Omg he looks perfect!!!!! Alright I’m excited now!” Another commented, “He looks more like Harry than Harry does.”

A separate post said, “Okay dang it’s like they took the art right off the cover of the first book!” Others remarked, “He looks the part, I gotta say surprised,” and “He looks a lot like Harry from the books ??”

Production is underway at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in the UK. The series is described as a “faithful adaptation” with one season dedicated to each book. HBO confirmed new cast members including Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Ollivander.

Additional cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid. J.K. Rowling serves as executive producer, and Gardiner writes the series. HBO is reportedly expected to premiere the show in 2027.
