Jason Momoa Fights Colonizers in Chief of War Trailer

Apple TV+ has shared the official Chief of War trailer for its newest epic historical drama led by Jason Momoa, who is no stranger to the genre after previously starring in Discovery Channel’s Frontier series. The series is scheduled to start streaming on August 1, 2025.

“The story follows the epic and unprecedented telling of the unification and colonization of Hawai‘i at the turn of the 18th century. Told from an indigenous perspective, Chief of War is a passion project for creators Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, who both share native Hawaiian heritage,” reads the official synopsis.

What happens in the Chief of War trailer?

The video introduces Momoa as a Native Hawaiian warrior named Kaʻiana, who will lead his tribe against foreign colonizers. It also highlights the war of the four major kingdoms of the Hawaiian Islands, providing viewers with a glimpse of the some of show’s epic fight sequences. To stand a chance against foreign invaders, Ka’iana must find a way to unite the people. The ensemble cast features a predominantly Polynesian cast, including Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, newcomer Kaina Makua, Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, Te Kohe Tuhaka, and Benjamin Hoetjes.

Chief of War is co-written and executive produced by Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett, with Doug Jung set as the showrunner. The epic story follows the unification and colonization of Hawaii from an indigenous point of view. The series is executive produced by Jung, Francis Lawrence, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Erik Holmberg, and Justin Chon, who also serves as the director for the first two episodes. It is produced by Endeavor Content and Chernin Entertainment.
