While Apple TV+’s latest crime drama, Smoke, is still nearing its release date, showrunner Dennis Lehane has already spoken about plans for Season 2 of the show. In a recent discussion, Lehane outlined his vision for the upcoming show, including details about how long he wants the series to run.
Smoke showrunner wants to do Season 2 and 3 for Apple TV+ series
While speaking with The Direct, the veteran novelist opened up about his plans for the upcoming Apple TV+ show, revealing that he intends to wrap up Smoke with Seasons 2 and 3.
Replying to a question regarding his “long-term plans” for the series, Lehane stated, “I want to go three [seasons]. Whether Apple wants to go three will depend on how many people show up and watch it. But I want to do three, and I have a very strong sense of how those three will end. I never know how I’m going to get to my ends, but I usually know what my ends are.”
Lehane’s much-awaited crime series follows the journey of Taron Egerton’s Dave Gudsen, a veteran arson investigator hunting two serial arsonists who have been ravaging his town. In addition to Egerton, the show also features Jurnee Smollett, who portrays Detective Michelle Calderon, Gudsen’s new partner. Meanwhile, John Leguizamo will star as Dave’s old partner, Esposito, with Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine playing the role of local outcast Freddy.
Aside from providing updates regarding a possible Season 2 and 3 of Smoke, Lehane also shed light on his ideology behind having “flawed protagonists” in the show, noting, “I have always built characters from the flaws out. I don’t go from what makes them strong, I tend to go from what makes them weak or what makes them, because I find flaws are interesting, and I don’t find the guy in the white hat all that interesting.”
Smoke’s debut season will premiere on Apple TV+ on June 27, 2025.
