Paramount Pictures has released the official Smurfs trailer for its upcoming animated musical comedy featuring the voice of Grammy winner Rihanna as the newest voice of Smurfette. The fan-favorite character was previously voiced by Katy Perry in the 2011 and 2013 adaptations and by Demi Lovato in the 2017 version.
“When Papa Smurf is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him. With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe,” reads the official synopsis.

What happens in the Smurfs trailer?
The video highlights the titular characters’ action-packed adventure as they must find a way to retrieve Papa Smurf from their enemies. The trailer also provides fans with a snippet of Rihanna’s newest song for the movie, titled “Friend of Mine,” which will be available this Friday. The new Smurfs movie serves as a reboot of Sony Pictures Animation’s film franchise, which featured Hank Azaria, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Winters, Fred Armisen, and more.
The Smurfs movie is directed by Chris Miller from a screenplay written by Pam Brady. The ensemble cast also includes James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña, and Marshmello, with Kurt Russell and John Goodman. In addition to starring, Rihanna is also set as a producer alongside Jay Brown, Ty Ty Smith, and Ryan Harris. It is executive produced by Pete Chiappetta, Anthony Tittanegro, and Andrew Lary.
The Smurfs movie will arrive in theaters on July 18.
